Car sharing requires the operator’s approval as well as a license valid for driving in Korea. Exchanging a license does not guarantee a Socar or G car account. Check license acceptance, identity verification and coverage before making plans.
Review the reservation before paying
- Confirm the operator’s approval. Check that your identity, license and payment registration are accepted for the product; a legal driving entitlement alone isn’t account approval.
- Confirm collection and return. Check the exact parking space, return location and booked time. Round-trip and one-way products have different instructions.
- Compare the complete bill. Review rental time, selected protection, distance charges, tolls and parking. SOCAR’s current distance rules below are not every operator’s policy.
- Read the protection exclusions. Check which driver is registered, what costs are outside the selected product and how to report an incident. Do not treat a deductible as an all-cost cap.
- Record condition and completion. Check and report existing damage before moving the car. At return, follow the operator’s lock/return steps and keep the completion record.
Reservation checklist added 14 October 2026. SOCAR’s public guide and fare page were checked for the stated registration, card and distance-charge points. G car’s product rules, app approval, driving and an actual insurance claim were not tested.
Before relying on a shared car, check three things with the operator: which licenses it accepts, how it verifies your identity, and the return rules that affect your bill. Approval to drive in Korea and approval to use a particular app are separate checks.
The license question comes first
Before anything else, settle what you are allowed to drive on. A foreign license alone does not permit driving in Korea; the Korea Road Traffic Authority states this directly. Your routes are an international driving permit within its validity, or a Korean license obtained by exchange.
Two conditions from KoROAD decide whether the exchange trip works. Only a valid full license can be exchanged: temporary, learner, provisional and probationary licenses and permits cannot. And the embassy confirmation or Apostille must have been issued within one year of your application. Check KoROAD’s current application and proxy rules for your circumstances before visiting. Socar’s guide (Korean), checked 6 October and reread 14 October 2026 for the stated age and registration steps, states a minimum age of 21 and requires phone verification plus license and payment registration. Confirm accepted license type and driving-history requirements with the operator; G car’s own rules must be checked separately. A legal driving entitlement is not an account approval.
Confirm identity and the accepted payment registration
This is where sign-ups actually fail, and it is the same failure that breaks Korean banking and delivery apps.
Follow the selected operator’s identity instructions and confirm the license details it uses. SOCAR requires mobile identity verification, but its guide doesn’t establish that every employer or family plan fails. Its fare page allows your own personal card, a corporate card or an unnamed corporate card; confirm that your chosen registration is accepted before relying on the car. A data-only travel eSIM does not provide an SMS receiving service. For a passport-based postpaid line, check whether the carrier record needs updating. KT’s published 5G terms (Korean) describe a three-month re-registration condition for the specified passport-based route. This is a KT example, not a verified rule for every carrier or product. If a registration step fails, identify the method and ask the provider responsible for that record. Check product and payment eligibility too; changing immigration details isn’t the remedy for every rejection. The name verification guide and SIM guide describe the separate checks.
It is not a rental counter
The mental model that causes trouble is the airport rental desk. Car sharing works differently in ways that cost money if you assume otherwise.
Socar operates through Socar Zones, designated parking spaces where you collect and return the car. The company states there are more than 5,000 nationwide, including zones near Jeju Airport, Gimpo Airport, Seoul Station, Busan Station, Daejeon Station and Gwangju Songjeong Station.
For a round-trip SOCAR booking, follow the specified return zone. A one-way or delivery product can have different collection and return terms; check them before paying. If plans change during the trip, use the app or support to confirm an accepted change rather than leaving the car at another location.
Parking is cleaner than expected. Socar states that parking costs inside a Socar Zone are included in the rental price: no separate parking fee. But paid parking you use elsewhere during the trip is on you.
What the bill is made of
Three components, and only the first is the one people compare.
- Rental time, booked in blocks. Extending mid-trip is normally possible in the app, but not if someone has booked the car after you.
- Distance charge. SOCAR’s current fare page says its combustion vehicles normally have no distance charge for the first 30 km; distance after that is charged at the displayed vehicle rate. It says electric-vehicle distance charges are free. Check the actual product before paying; other operators’ rules may differ.
- Insurance product, chosen at booking. Read exclusions, deductibles and charges outside the selected protection. The deductible does not necessarily cap every possible liability.
Fuel or charging is generally handled with a card in the car rather than out of pocket. Read your operator’s rule on the return fuel level before you set off, because the penalty for returning empty is a real line item.
Two operators, and a naming change worth knowing
Socar is the larger network and the one most foreign residents settle on.
G car is the other major service, and this is where guides written before 2025 mislead. Greencar rebranded its car-sharing service to G car, with the corporate entity unchanged, so English guides still calling it Greencar are describing the same company under an old brand. Its customer site now sits at greencar-gcar.co.kr, while the app store listing retains the older package name. If you are searching, try both terms.

Is the app usable in English?
Partly, and unevenly. Interface elements are often translated while the parts that matter most (insurance product descriptions, penalty terms, damage reporting) tend to stay Korean or read awkwardly in translation.
The practical approach is to read the Korean terms through translation before your first booking rather than during it. Socar publishes its terms and help documentation openly, and the insurance and penalty sections are worth ten minutes before you are standing next to a car with a scratch on it.
Before you drive off, and before you hand it back
Photograph the car’s condition before moving it and again at return, including any existing damage and the displayed fuel or charge level. Use the operator’s reporting steps promptly. Photos help document the condition; they do not decide liability or guarantee that a dispute will be resolved in your favor.
Report any damage you find through the app before starting the trip, not after. Photos and prompt reports document the condition; the operator investigates responsibility under its terms.
When not to bother
Compare the actual trip: rental time, protection, distance charges, return route, tolls and parking against taxi or rail tickets and onward transport. No mode is always cheaper or easier. The taxi guide describes another option.
Car sharing earns its place for a specific shape of trip: multiple stops, somewhere transit doesn’t reach, luggage or bulky purchases, or a group splitting the cost. If your Saturday is one destination on a train line, skip all of this; the options are in the day trips guide.

Can I register a corporate card with SOCAR?
SOCAR’s fare page lists corporate and unnamed corporate cards as supported categories, alongside your own personal card. Confirm that the actual card registration is accepted. This does not establish G car’s policy.
Can foreigners use Socar in Korea?
SOCAR’s guide states a minimum age of 21 and requires mobile identity verification plus license and payment registration. Confirm the license type and experience accepted by SOCAR; a permit valid for driving in Korea doesn’t by itself prove that this operator accepts it. Account approval is a separate step.
Can I return a Socar car to a different location?
For a round-trip booking, return to the specified SOCAR Zone. If you want another return location, check an available one-way or delivery product and its terms before booking. Ask SOCAR about an accepted change if the plans later differ; do not leave the car somewhere else without confirmation.

Check which parts need the app before booking on the web
SOCAR’s current use guide (Korean) separates its web and app functions. The web supports round-trip booking, while smart-key controls, booking changes and extensions use the app. Complete the required app setup before going to the car; a browser confirmation alone does not establish that you can unlock it.
Save the exact parking-space directions and the booked return time. If the car is inside a garage, check the garage’s access conditions as well as the booking time. Give yourself enough time to find the vehicle and report a problem before your planned departure.
Before moving the car, inspect its condition and register any additional driver through the operator’s process. At return, follow the app’s completion steps and keep the result. SOCAR’s guide specifically includes locking the vehicle and completing return in the app. Merely parking in the right space does not complete every required step.
Read the charges outside the selected protection
SOCAR’s fee and protection page (Korean) says roadside handling costs such as towing and recovery fall outside the stated vehicle-damage-waiver coverage. Check the terms for the exact product and driver. A chosen deductible is not a promise that every possible cost ends at that amount.
Keep a written list of what you checked: account approval, license acceptance, payment registration, additional driver, parking access, return location and charges outside protection. If one remains unanswered, ask the operator before paying. A valid license or successful web login doesn’t resolve the rest of that list.
