For a trip from Seoul to Gyeongju, compare the train to Gyeongju Station with a bus to the downtown terminals. The train station is outside the historic center, so the faster train ride still needs a local transfer. From Busan, a day trip can work if you focus on the central sights.
Choose your arrival point
| Starting point | Route to compare | Suggested stay |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul | KTX to Gyeongju Station, then local transport; or a bus to the downtown terminal | One night |
| Incheon Airport | AREX to Seoul Station, then KTX; check direct bus availability for your arrival date | Two nights, or travel the next morning after a late flight |
| Busan | KTX from Busan Station; or a bus from Busan Central Bus Terminal | Day trip or overnight |
The stay lengths are planning suggestions. Check your hotel’s location and your return transport before booking.
From Seoul: train or bus?
Gyeongju City’s English guide gives an approximate KTX journey of 2 hours 10 minutes from Seoul. Treat this as an indication rather than a timetable: the train you book may take a different amount of time. Search your date and destination in KORAIL’s booking service (Korean site; choose its English option) (Korean may appear).
If you are staying in southern Seoul, compare departures from Suseo as well as Seoul Station. Older guides may call the Suseo service SRT. KORAIL’s September 2026 announcement confirms that high-speed operations have been integrated; check the current departure station and train name when booking.
Allow for the last part of the journey. Gyeongju Station (경주역) is at 80 Gyeongjuyeok-ro, Geoncheon-eup, outside the central historic district. Check a local bus or taxi route to your accommodation before choosing your arrival time.
The city’s guide also lists a bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal, with an approximate journey of 3 hours 35 minutes. Traffic can extend this. The downtown terminal may suit a hotel near the historic center better, so compare the complete trip from your accommodation in Seoul to your hotel in Gyeongju.
Suggested overnight plan: arrive with time to leave your luggage, then visit Daereungwon and Hwangnidan-gil. If you want an evening visit to Donggung and Wolji, check its opening hours before fixing dinner and return plans. Use the following morning for Bulguksa if the onward journey allows.
From Incheon Airport: choose after checking your flight time
A route to compare is the Airport Railroad (AREX) to Seoul Station, followed by KTX to Gyeongju Station. These are separate parts of the journey. Allow time for immigration, baggage collection, reaching the airport train and changing trains at Seoul Station.
Gyeongju City’s guide lists an airport bus connection, but that listing does not establish today’s departures or available seats. Use Incheon Airport’s bus search and booking links (Korean) to check your terminal, travel date and Gyeongju destination before relying on a direct bus. This article does not quote an unverified fare or departure time.
If your flight arrives late, compare an overnight stay near the airport or in Seoul with continuing to Gyeongju the next morning. Avoid buying a connection that leaves no room for flight delays or airport formalities.
Suggested two-night plan: travel and rest on arrival day, spend the next day around the central historic sights, then visit Bulguksa or continue to Busan on the final day. Check attraction hours separately.

From Busan: keep a day trip focused
Gyeongju City’s English guide gives about 30 minutes for the KTX ride from Busan. The train ride is only part of the trip: add the journey from Gyeongju Station to the center. Compare this with a bus from Busan Central Bus Terminal, especially if that terminal is closer to where you are staying.
For a day trip, focus on Daereungwon, Hwangnidan-gil and Cheomseongdae. If the night view at Donggung and Wolji matters to you, choose your return transport around that visit. Trying to add Bulguksa as well gives you less time in the central area.
Save the right names before leaving
- Gyeongju Station (경주역): the high-speed rail arrival point outside the center.
- Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal (경주고속버스터미널) and Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal (경주시외버스터미널): use the exact terminal printed on your ticket rather than searching only for “Gyeongju.”
- Your accommodation: ask the property for its Korean name and address. Keep a copy to show a taxi driver if the English name is difficult to find.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gyeongju Station in the historic center?
No. Plan a local bus or taxi journey after arriving by high-speed train, and check your hotel’s location before booking.
Can I visit Gyeongju as a day trip from Busan?
Yes. A day focused on the central sights is a practical option. Check the last return connection if you plan an evening visit.
Should I assume a direct bus is available after my flight?
No. Check live departures from your arrival terminal before choosing that route. A city tourism listing alone does not confirm a usable connection.
Do I need to return to Seoul after Gyeongju?
No. If your wider itinerary continues south, compare onward travel to Busan before buying a return ticket to Seoul.
