Cycling in Seoul for Beginners: Easy Han River Routes

Seoul looks different from the seat of a bicycle. Along the Hangang (Han River), you can trade crowded sidewalks for riverside paths, stop for a snack, and be back on the subway before dinner. You don’t need to own a bike or plan a cross-country adventure.

Pick a short route before you rent

For a first ride, choose one river park and plan to return to the same general area. Yeouido Hangang Park works well if you want a central starting point with rest stops nearby. Mangwon Hangang Park is another option if you’re staying in western Seoul. Check the riverside entrances and current path closures before setting off. Walking routes, road crossings, and bicycle routes don’t always follow the same line.

If you prefer a longer point-to-point outing, the Seoul Metropolitan Government describes a Sangam to Yeouido course via Hongjecheon and Mangwon Hangang Park. Its published guide identifies a 10 km course; treat its timing as a leisure itinerary, not a guaranteed cycling time. See Seoul’s official route description.

How to use Ttareungi, Seoul’s public bikes

  1. Open the official Seoul Bike service or app and locate an available bicycle and a nearby return station.
  2. Choose a daily pass. Foreign visitors can use the tourist guidance, including its English-language instructions.
  3. Check your brakes, tires, seat height, and the bike’s condition before you leave the station.
  4. Return the bike to an authorized station within your pass’s rental interval. Confirm that the app shows the return as complete before walking away.

Seoul’s official service currently lists daily passes for one-hour, two-hour and three-hour rental intervals, priced at KRW 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 respectively. The interval is the time allowed per rental, not permission to keep one bike all day without returning it. Late-return charges may apply. Check the price and pass details again at payment. A practical first-ride plan

Stage What to do Why it helps
Before renting Find two nearby return stations on the map. You’ll have a backup if your first station is full.
First 10 minutes Ride slowly on a clear stretch. Check the brakes and how the bike handles.
Midway stop Pull off the cycling lane before stopping for photos or food. Other cyclists can pass safely.
Before your pass interval ends Head toward an available station and finish the return in the app. Avoid unexpected fees.

Three things visitors often miss

First, the clock matters more than distance. If you have a one-hour pass, plan a shorter ride and allow time to find a return station. Second, don’t follow a walking route blindly. Check whether the suggested path stays on designated cycling routes. Third, check your return confirmation. Locking a bike isn’t always the same as a recorded return.

What to bring

Carry water, a charged phone, a payment card, and clothes suited to the weather. A properly fitted helmet is a sensible safety choice. Keep right where the marked path requires it, slow down near people walking, and stop if rain or visibility makes riding unsafe. Do not hold your phone while cycling.
