Before heading to your accommodation, choose a suitable SIM, check that it works with your phone, and test the connection. Airport assistance is especially useful if you’re unsure about installing an eSIM or need help choosing between data and voice services.

The advice below uses official carrier information to explain what to prepare and what to ask at the counter. The specific airport examples below are from LG U+. They’re planning examples, not a comparison of every provider.

Check your phone before choosing a SIM

Start by checking whether your phone is unlocked. LG U+ says its physical SIM works with most unlocked phone models and advises travelers with a country lock to contact their existing carrier before arriving. See the official LG U+ compatibility FAQ.

If you want an eSIM, ask the Korean provider to confirm compatibility with your exact phone model and the country where it was purchased. Do this before paying. LG U+ specifically advises checking eSIM compatibility before purchase in its SIM and eSIM guidance.

A useful question is: “Can you confirm that this product works with this phone?” Show the model information in your settings. If you’re unsure, ask the staff to explain the available physical SIM and eSIM options before making a decision.

Find the correct airport counter

Check your arrival airport and terminal against the provider’s official pickup information. If you already have a reservation, follow the collection instructions attached to that reservation rather than assuming any SIM counter can process it.

For example, LG U+ lists its Incheon Airport Terminal 1 counters in the Level 1 arrival hall. Its Gate F counter is listed as open 24 hours, while its Gate A counter is listed as open from 06:00 to 22:00. These details come from the official Incheon Terminal 1 counter page. Recheck the page before traveling, especially if your flight arrives late.

LG U+ also says you can visit its customer centers on arrival without a prior reservation. See its official booking FAQ. If you prefer to decide at the airport, think about what you need beforehand so you can explain it clearly.

Bring your passport and reservation details

Keep your passport accessible and make sure any reservation details match it. LG U+ lists a passport upload requirement in its official SIM product notice. Follow the verification instructions for the product you choose.

If you reserved ahead, save the confirmation where you can find it easily. Before handing over payment, ask the staff to confirm the product name, accepted payment method, total charge, and what is included. Keep the receipt and any setup instructions together.

Choose data or data plus voice

Explain how you expect to use your phone. Will you mainly need maps, browsing, and internet messaging? Will you also need to make ordinary phone calls or send text messages?

LG U+ distinguishes data-only products from data-plus-voice products. Its FAQ says data-only service does not support outgoing calls or texts, while data-plus-voice service does. Check the official feature comparison before choosing.

Ask specifically about any app verification you need. LG U+ says its voice/SMS services support SMS verification for restaurant and taxi reservation apps, but do not support identity verification for banking or government services. It also says SMS verification is unavailable with data-only service. See the official product restrictions. Do not assume a working internet connection guarantees access to every Korean service.

Confirm the price and activation rules

Ask for the total price of the exact product you intend to buy. Clarify whether voice credit is included, whether outgoing texts incur separate charges, and whether the service covers your departure date. Use the official product page as a reference, then confirm the selected option at the counter.

Ask: “When does this plan start, and exactly when will it expire?” Ask the staff to write down or show you the answer. If you may extend your stay, ask how extensions work for that specific product and where you can request help later.

Test the connection before leaving

After setup, ask the staff to help you check the connection. Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily and open a webpage so you can confirm that mobile data works. Try the map or messaging app you expect to use on your trip from the airport.

If your chosen plan includes voice or text services, ask how to test those functions and whether a test would cost anything. Save the support page, your receipt, and your plan details before leaving the counter.

If an eSIM does not work, ask for help before deleting it. LG U+ states that an activated eSIM cannot be reinstalled or reissued in its official eSIM FAQ.

Before heading out, make sure you understand which mobile line is being used for data, how to reach support, and when your service ends.

Check your route while you still have counter support

After activation, turn off Wi-Fi briefly and test mobile data. Open the map route to your accommodation and save the address. If a taxi booking or verification message is part of your plan, check that your chosen package supports the service you need.

Then follow the airport transport guide for train, coach, taxi and terminal-transfer options.

Airport SIM questions

Can I assume an eSIM can be moved to another phone?

No. Check your provider’s rules, since LG U+ says an activated travel eSIM cannot be installed again or reissued.

Do I need a plan with calls just to use maps?

No. Maps need data, but calls, texts and app checks may need other plan features.

Do I have to buy a SIM to use the free planner?

No. You can use the planner and save its PDF without buying a SIM.

Should I save my plan details before leaving the SIM counter?

Yes. Keep the plan name, start and end times, receipt and support contact in a private note.
